Reading Lists

I am currently reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett (July/August 2011).  While I like the story, I am enjoying the characters a lot more than I thought I would.  I can agree with other reviewers that much of the characterization of the maids in the book is more shallow than I would have hoped, it does present an interesting point of view.  The books I've read that deal with race relations were mostly those that were required for school.  I remember Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye being something that communicated the pain that was felt through the innocent eyes of a young girl.

I feel that sometimes I'm expecting too much from a book, but other times I'm not expecting enough.

This might come from the Janet Evanovich books that I've been reading recently which are total trash the further you get in the series.  I always seem to find something in the book that rubs me the wrong way: the main character doesn't develop, the plot is lacking, there's little depth to the characters, the diction, the syntax.  It's always something.  Maybe I need to get back into literature rather than beach read material.
